Obama - GLobal Warming Alarmist!

We are far enough into the campaign now to examine positions on global warming. I will start with Senator Obama since he appears to be the democratic choice to lead us deeper into socialism.

Obama on Global Warming:

We cannot afford more of the same timid politics when the future of our planet is at stake. Global warming is not a someday problem, it is now. We are already breaking records with the intensity of our storms, the number of forest fires, he periods of drought. By 2050 famine could force more than 250 million from their homes . . . . The polar ice caps are ow melting faster than science had ever predicted. . . . This is not the future I want for my daughters. It’s not the future any of us want for our children. And if we act now and we act boldly, it doesn’t have to be.”
[Barack Obama, Portsmouth, NH, 10/8/07]

First, where does this information come from? From what I can find through much research, we have only been monitoring the ice caps for 35 years. I am not a math major, but can 35 years really be used as a predictor for something that is almost as old as the earth itself? Just doesn’t add up enough to justify Obama’s comments, nor does it even remotely justify the ‘ice is melting’ hysteria. Perhaps this article by CNN is relevant:

Will ice melt open fabled Northwest Passage?
WASHINGTON (CNN) — Rapid melting of the Arctic ice pack may turn a cherished sailor’s myth into reality. The Northwest Passage, the legendary shipping shortcut from the Atlantic to the Pacific, could be ice-free in as few as 10 years, many predict.”

OK, should we panic now? Probably not, they fail to include the fact that Roald Amundsen successfully navigated the Northwest Passage, over 100 years ago in a wooden boat. Common sense screams out to me that if the passage was clear enough to traverse 100 years ago in a wooden boat, how in the world are we (mankind) causing it to happen? Sounds more like a natural cycle of the earth. Again, media propagated hysteria! Shame on you Senator Obama!

But wait, it gets better! The famed National Geographic has this story: Arctic Melt Opens Northwest Passage!

Oh crap, if Nat Geo says it, I better start stocking up on grass skirts! Well, maybe not. The story is quite misleading and full of holes. One example is the statement,”Extreme” Ice Loss. According to ESA, 2007 represents the lowest amount of Arctic sea ice on record” Sounds pretty impressive! BUT, they admit shortly before this statement that the passage has been navigable before, but with ‘difficulty’. Then they vaguely admit to the time frame “But this is the first time the Northwest Passage has been “fully navigable” since ESA began measuring the Arctic sea ice with satellites.” Ok, 35 years, surely Nat Geo has enough experience with history to know that 35 years doesn’t mean JACK!

Let’s move on to another Obama Quote: “We are already breaking records with the intensity of our storms, the number of forest fires, the periods of drought. By 2050 famine could force more than 250 million from their homes

So, let’s check some historical facts based on this statement. Lets look at the top ten strongest US Hurricanes:

1. The Great Labor Day Storm
September 2, 1935
Florida

One of just three Category 5 Hurricanes to make landfall in the US, the Great Labor Day Storm had a minimum pressure of 892 millibars (26.35 inches). It caused 423 deaths in Florida. It also was notable for providing the setting for the Humphrey Bogart - Lauren Bacall movie, Key Largo.
2. Hurricane Katrina
August, 2005
Louisiana and Mississippi

Catagory 5. Katrina had a minimum pressure of 904 millibars (26.64 inches), making it the second most intense storm to hit the US, as well as the most costly, and the third dealiest.
3. Hurricane Camille
August 17 - 22, 1969
Mississippi, SE Louisiana, Virginia

Camille, a Category 5, was the second most intense Hurricane ever to hit the United States, with a minimum pressure of 909 millibars (26.84 inches). The final windspeed will never be known because all measuring devices were destroyed, but it is thought to exceed 200 mph.
4. Hurricane Andrew
August 24 - 28, 1992
Florida and Louisiana

A Category 4 when it hit Florida, Hurricane Andrew hit Louisiana as a Category 3. At its peak, Andrew had a minimum pressure of 922 millibars (27.23 inches).
5. Unnamed Hurricane
August 29, 1886
Indianola, Texas

This Category 4 Hurricane turned Indianola into a Ghost Town. Today, the Court House lies 300 feet out in Matagorda Bay. The storm had a recorded minimum pressure of 925 millibars (27.31 inches).
6. The Atlantic-Gulf Hurricane
Florida, Texas
September 10 - 14, 1919

This hurricane struck the Keys as a Category 4, and Texas as a Category 3. At its peak, it had a minimum pressure of 927 millibars (27.37 inches).
7. San Felipe-Okeechobee Hurricane
September 16 - 17, 1928
Florida

The fourth strongest Hurricane to hit the US mainland caused a lake surge on the inland Lake Okeechobee in Florida that rose as high as nine feet, flooding nearby towns. A Category 4, it had a minimum pressure of 929 millibars (27.43 inches)
8. Hurricane Donna
September 8 - 13, 1960
Florida to New England

Donna is the only hurricane known to have produce hurricane-force winds in Florida, the Mid-Atlantic states, and New England. At its peak, it had a minimum pressure of 930 milibars (27.46 inches).
9. Unnamed Storm
September 30, 1915
New Orleans, Louisiana

This unnamed Category 4 Storm reached a minimum pressure of 931 millibars (27.49 inches). It flooded Lake Pontchartrain, causing it to overflow its banks and killing 275 people.
10. Hurricane Carla
September 11, 1961
Texas

A Category 4, Carla had a minimum pressure of 931 millibars (27.49 inches), tying it with the 1915 Louisiana storm.

Well, where is the trend Mr Obama? Where have all the hurricanes gone since 2005? Enough on that mute non-issue!

So, as we can all plainly see, Senator Obama is BLINDLY following and not leading, much like those who are blindly following him to the polls! My next posting we will examine in some detail Senator Obama’s grand plans to combat “Global Warming”
